Lot Essay

This compositional type, in which a fisherman is seen wading on a beach towards sailing boats, is not only reminiscent of the beach scenes by Van de Cappelle, but also of the 'Calms' Willem van de Velde the Younger executed in the 1660s.

This picture is included in Ulrike Middendorf's monograph on Hendrik Dubbels as by the artist and as signed 'H. .ubbels'. This attribution and the signature were at the time based on information and photographs at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague. However, she rejected the attribution in 2006.
